SCOUT NOTES

(By "Scouter.”) Entries for the annual competitions are vary disappointing. The secretory will be pleased to receive entries before Saturday, September 25. The City Council has granted the use of Central Park on the afternoons of October 2 and 9, for the competitions. St. Judes’s Troop met on September 13. Assistant-Scoutmaster Waterhouse, and AssistanLDistrict Scoutmaster Jantke were also present. Several lads were put through their second-class test. The cubs, under Mr. Ridley, are coming on well. So far, three boys have passed their tenderpad. Later in the evening, the Rev. Page (troop chaplain) spoke a few words on the Scout work. It is hoped to have a play ready for the next investiture. Last week the Commissioner looked in on St, Michael’s and Trinity Troops, and also paid a visit to the Royer Company. He notes that it was pleasing to notice the progress made by the troops. The Rovers are doing fine work, and the Commissioner 'eft for their perusal a series of articles on the "Choice of a Career,” a subject all important to every Rover. The date of the annual meeting for Wellington district is put off until October 27, as Monday, October 25, is Labour Dav. The Dominion annual conference of council and commissioners will be held in We'lington on November 25. Representatives of all districts in New Zealand are exneeted. Warrants have been issued to committees for assistant district scoutmasters Orono. Payne. McKenzie. Scoutmasters Sims. Rev. Dennis. Wells, for AssistantScoutmasters Reere. Cheesemnn.. Kinwig, and Oubrnnsters Willnr and Hill. Y.M.C.A. Troon No. 1 met Inst Thursday eveninc, when the following badges were presented*—Pntro'-lender N. Glover, interpreters■ Scout D. McCnwe, swimming i Scout H. Tobin, cyclist; Scouts

R. Miller, K. Spry, and I. Bowden, tenderfoots; Scouts D. Stewart, J. Evans, R. Cowans, J. Cowles. K. Blair, senice stars; and seven enrolment cards. During the evening, Mr. Tuelv the lads an interesting talk, after which the Scout law and promise was repeated, and the troop dismissed. Following is the census of the _We hngton District Boy Scouts’ Association:— One district commissioner, one district secretary, four district scoutmasters, four assistant-district scoutmasters, two district cubmasters. 43 scoutmasters, 58 assistant scoutmasters. 1190 Pcouts, 45 Sea. Scouts, eight cubmasters, four assistant cubmaster, 308 cubs, one rovermaster, 14 Rovers, making a total of 1713. It might be truly said that the patrolleader can do more with the Scout than can the scoutmaster, and if the patrol-, leaders know the right thing to do. and carry it out correctly, they are going to make a very fine troop. New Scouts have n habit of watching what the patrol-loaders and boys do. then they co and do likewise. If a new Scout hears his patrol-leader continually grumbling, he will probahlv think that is the nroner thing for Scouts to do nnd do it himself. The Chief ha s said somewhere that: “A stick and a smile will carry von through any difficulty in the world.” Not a heavy kit, but the heavies; nart of it can often bo dispensed with. •Kindly fn-ward notes to C. Meacuea, “Tthacn,” Thorndon Quay, on or before Monday of each week.
