A HANDSOME LEGACY

DEATH OF MR. WILLIAM WEIR £70,000 LEFT TO VICTORIA COLLEGE By the death of Mr. William Weir on Wednesday evening, it is. understood that the Victoria University College Council will benefit to the extent of £70,000 The terms of the bequest, it is believed, are that the money shall be expended on the construction of a hostel at the college. Boro 88 years ago in the West of Scotland, the late Mr. Weir arrived in New Zealand in 1864. He landed at Bluff, and after a brief stay at Invercargill came to Wellington, where he continued to reside up to the time of his death. In his youth he was apprenticed to the cabinet-making and joinery trade, and soon after settling in Wellington joined the firm of John Duff. He later went into partnership with the late William Waddell and Archibald McLeod, a firm which subsequently became known as McLeod, Weir and Hopkirk, timber and glass merchants. Although the concern still trades under this name, Mr. Weir retired from it some seven years ago. He was first and foremost a keen business man, and did not fake any great interest in public affairs. He was not particularly interested in sport, but dearly loved cricket, and nothing pleased him more than to stroll down from his home in Brougham Street and watch the cricketers at play on the Basin Reserve. For some little time he had been in indifferent health, and ten days ago took a bad turn, to which he succumbed. The deceased gentleman never married. After a short service at his late residence in Brougham Street this afternoon, the interment will take place at the Karori Cemetery.
