A HELPING HAND
THE POOR FAMILY PROBLEM Some pointed observations upon duty that exists to assist families who are "up against it” were made by the Prime Minister (Right Hon. J. G. Coates) in an address to a gathering of Women Reform supporters last night. ‘‘We have endeavoured,” said the Prime Minister, “to distribute some of the good things amongst the poorer sections of the community. It would not be right,” he proceeded "to ignore the trials and difficulties of the people who were up against it—to ignore the voice crying in the wilderness—and to blame the little children because their parents had not been thrifty. There was a duty to the ‘young immigrants of the country’ to see that thev had sufficient to eat, a sufficient education, and n really good preparation for their future, as far as it was possible to provide.” The Prime Minister said it was hoped later to remove some of the families from the congested areas in Wellington. Some of the places were not fit for children to live in.
