ON COBHAMS ARRIVAL IN MELBOURNE CROWD RUSHES GROUND DAMAGING MACHINE « Melbourne, August 16. Disorderly scenes marked the arriva of Alan Cobham on the completion of his flight A crowd of 15,000 was waiting at the landing ground at Essendon Aerodrome, and as Cobham was landing the mob broke the cordon and ran towards the machine. When Cobham unexpectedly turned towards the enclosure there was a frantic rush to get clear of the propeller. Many had narrow escapes. Slight damage was done to the machine, and a temporary broadcasting plant was trampled underfoot. Ihe police available were quite inadequate to maintain order. Dozens of women and children were crushed in the crowd, and had to be treated at the ambulance station. The official welcoming party was swept away, and Cobham had to he rescued by Air Force men.—Press Assn.
OVER SEVENTY PEOPLE INJURED (Rec. August 16, 11.20 p.m.) Melbourne, August. 16. Over seventy people were injured, principally crushed, when the crowd ran amuck during Cobham’s landing. A new decree increases Customs duties 30 per cent., except on tobaccos, newsprint, and cellulose used in the manufacture of paper, of sausages, and certain cheeses.
