♦ WELLINGTON AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP. The first games of the Wellington amateur billiards championship were played last night, at the rooms of Messrs. Billiards, Ltd. The entries this year amount to 20, as compared with 21 last year, clubs and associations on this occasicn being limited to three each. The present holder is Mr. W. N. Tucker, of the Federal Club, who has won the championship on several occasions, the other finalists last year being Petley, of the Commercial Travellers’ Club. The entries are as follow:— R. ■G. Anderson (Wellesley), L. J. Bryan (C.T.C.), E. N. Bromley (Public Service Association), P. G. Devine (Petone Working Men’s), A. A. Duncan (Wellington R.S.A.), F. Dwyer (Marist Old Boys). A. Freeman (Wellington Federal), C. Hendriksen (G.P.O. Pastimes), L. Y. Kyle (Petone Working Men’s), O'Brien (Marist Old Bovs), J. L. Petley (Commercial Travellers'), G. H. Pepper (Wellington R.S.A.), J. W. Prew (G.P.O. Pastimes), J. A. Rait, H. J. Shanks and B. Savage (Wellington Working Men’s), J. Spencer (Federal), W. N. Tucker (Federal), F H. Taylor (Wellesley), and W. Tumilty (Police Social). Last night two games of the first round were played off, Kyle meting Rait and Freeman meeting Savage. In the first event both started poorly, and scoring was slow, till Rait got going with a 24 break. The latter held the lead till well into his third hundred, when Kyle forged ahead and looked like winning, but Rait ran out with 23 unfinished, the final score being: Rait 300. Kyle 286. The best breaks were: Rait 24, 23, 21, and 23 (unfinished), and Kyle 36 and 23. Play opened more briskly in the second game, Freeman scoring a forceful 32, and Savage replying with a delightful 25. Both played good all-round billiards. and play was interesting throughout. Savage had a substantial lead when the third hundred was reached, when the Federal man put up a good 50, the best effort of the evening. The players chased each other close from then on, till Freeman needed four and his opponent 19. The latter added Bto his score, but lost his opportunity, and Freeman added the required points, the final score being: Freeman 300, Savage 289. The best breaks were: Freeman 32, 32, and 50, and Savage 25. To-night’s games are: Taylor v. Shanks and Tucker v. O’Brien.
