PETONE AFFAIRS

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS. A meeting of the Petone Borough Council was held last night, the Depu.tyMayor (Councillor C. P. Brockelbank) presiding, and the following being present:—Councillors E. N. Campbell, G. Cook. W. H. Edmunds, V. Jacobson. H. Jay. D. McCarthy, and A. Scholefield. The borough engineer (Mr. A. Cowie) reported that the cleaning of the reservoir began on July 24, was continued on the following Saturday, and would be completed on August 21. The accumulation of silt was considerably greater than was usually the case, ana a great deal had been got rid of. On August 14 the dam had been cleaned out. a great ■ quantity of silt, as well as shingle, being removed. A letter was considered from the Commissioner of Crown Lands, in regard to the exchange of land between the Lands Department and the council under the Hutt Valley settlement scheme. It was decided to hold the matter over until a better understanding could be reached. A letter was received from the secretary of the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board, advising that the board had appointed its chairman (Mr. A. J. McCurdy), together with Messrs. W. H. Barber, A. J. Hobbs, and Mr. H. E. Lodge, to confer with the council’s representatives in connection with the agreement regarding a sub-station, etc. The Deputy-Mayor reported that, with other members of the council, ho had conferred with a sub-committee of the Power Board, which was obviously trying to meet the council in every possible wav. , Letters were received from the Hon. the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates), the Leader of the Opposition (Mr. IL E Holland), Sir J. G. Ward, M.P., and Mr. G. W. Forbes, M.P., acknowledging the receipt of the council s resolution in support of the Town Planning Bill and promising their support.
