Tn the modern conditions cf postal efficiency it is scarcely conceivable that a carefully directed letter, addressed in legible handwriting, could have miscarried as the following authentic circumstances disclose (remarks the “Otago Daily Times”). Addressed to a longestablished London firm, and posted at Temuka on March 9,192 C, a letter was returned unclaimed to the Temuka Post Office on July 13. By some mischance it took a trip to Berlin, where it was branded “niclit abgeholt,” then it was passed on to Hungary, where the Budapest official said “nicht ahgefordert,” and returned it to the Hotel Bristol, Berlin. On its passage through Belgium it was liberally stamped "retour, retour, iefour.” to London, where the postal officials used it as an advertising medium by announcing on it "British goods are best,” and, in parentheses, "Unclaimed.” It was ultimately returned to Temuka. The writer wouders if it would be possible to do the trip through the agency of the Postal Department with equal chances of being returned home safely. Honesty no doubt pays, but in some cases the'payment is comparatively negligible. A purse was lost recently on the West Coast, duly advertised for and returned to its owner by the disciple of honesty who picked it up (says the "Greymouth Star”). The purse contained over JXX) in cash, a diamond ring and a diamond brooch, the jewellery being estimated to be worth nearly as much as the cash. The reward given to the finder was a 10s. note)
What is believed to be a meteorite has been found on a farm at Fitz.herbert West (says an exchange). It is about ScwC. in weight and has a peculiarly sponge-like appearance, with evidence of there having been great heat.
An extraordinary geranium, christened “Peppermint Bull’s-Eye/ was exhibited in London recently. Thick, velvety leaves give out a strong scent of peppermint, while the flower itslf, of a pale mauve colour, has no scent at nil. When this plant, is taken into a room people immediately receive the impression that somebody is sucking "bull’seyes.”
