FATALITY AT RONA BAY

FERRY PASSENGER KILLED CRUSHED BETWEEN STEAMER AND WHARF At Rona Bay about 6 o’clock last night Mr. Thomas Lambert, a married man, who resides in Marine Parade, Rona Bay, was killed as the result of being jammed between a ferry steamer and the wharf. Deceased was a passenger on tho Duchess, which left town at 5.15 p.m. on her usual run across the Bay. When the vessel arrived at Eastbourne and was swinging in towards the wharf, Mr. Lambert, who was evidently in a hurry to step ashore, tried to clamber off from the lower deck, instead of crossing by the gangway which is used by passengers on the deck above. While endeavouring to land in this manner, the ship not being properly moored swung in against the piles at the side of the wharf, catching deceased, who, after being badly crushed, was flung back on the deck almost immediately. Dr. Phyllis Mather was quickly summoned, and oti arrival she ordered Mr. Lambert’s instant removal to the hospital. Eastbourne, having no suitable conveyance, however, an ambulance had to be sent for from Lower Hutt, causing considerable delay to the dying patient. When the vehicle arrived the deceased was taken to the Wellington Hospital, but his injuries were so bad that he died on the way. The body was removed to the morgue. Mr. Lambert was employed by the T. and G. Mutual Life Assurance Society, Ltd.
