DEATH DUTIES

Sir,—l read Mr. Holland’s remarks on the death duties in this country, and, perhaps when he has had to go through the mill, he may alter his views somewhat. ~ , . ... The duties are very high in this country, much more than in England—there they are more considerate to people who have lost those nearest and dearest. I speak from experience. In England they give you a year to pay—in New Zealand three months—also, at Home they do not bump up valuations as is done here. It means one has to sell anything ono has, and a forced sale only benefits speculators. A property is so crippled for some years, that it cannot bo farmed to the test advantage, and therefore this is a loss to the country, because that property is not producing what it should do, and the banks aro awfully costly to deal with. —I am, etc., P.S.—I am told by a property owner in Ireland you get 8 years to pay duty. ONE WHO HAS BEEN THROUGH THE MILL.
