WELLINGTON STOCK EXCHANGE YESTERDAY’S BUSINESS AND PRICES At the morning call yesterday a sale of 4} pei- cent, stocks (1938) at £96 17s. Gd. was reported. At the afternoon call the sales reported were 4J- per cent, stocks (1938) at £96 17s. 6d„ and per cent, bonds (193.9)- at £96 15s. there was a very moderate demand for stocks and shares. The 4-J per cents, were in demand at £96 12s. Gd., the 5 per cents, at £9B 12s 6d., and the 5$ per cents, at £99 10s. Bank .shares were very cjuiet. NATIONAL MUTUAL LIFE At the half-yearly meeting of policyholders of the National Mutual Life Association held in Melbourne on J uno 30 no statement of accounts was submitted, but the chairman, Mr. E. Trenchard, said that since the issue of the last report the business of the association had continued to make satisfactory progress. A large amount of new business had been transacted, and the funds of the association were fully invested at current rates of interest. BUTTER AND CHEESE The colonial butter trade is said to be lifeless, but there ie rather more inquiry for finest New Zealand, for w,hich the quotation is 170 s. Secondary and in-

ferior sorts are difficult of sale owing to low prices of Continental and lack of demand. The quantity of butter in store in New Zealand at the close of last month was G 255 tons, as against 8992 tons at the end of. May, so that a fair quantity was shipped during June. Writing in respect of the situation during the recent strike in Britain, Messrs. Dalgety and Co., in their Dairy Produce Circular of May 31, say: "In order to prevent needless and panicky advances consequent upon the difficulty of obtaining goods, and also to allay uneasiness on the part of the public, it was agreed by the importers, wholesale houses and retailers to stabilise prices as far as possible. Importers and agents of the London Provision Exchange a-reed, by arrangement with the Board of Trade, that until further notice the maximum prices to be charged for bacon, hams, lard, butter, and cheese should not be above the highest prices ouoted by the Exchange on Friday, April 30.’’ The imports of butter into the United Kingdom for the four mouths to April 30 totalled 2,108,517 cwt., as compared with 2,276,458 cwt. in the corresponding term of last vear, showing a decrease of lG7,G4lcwt. The imports from New Zealand during the first four months of the current year amounted to 609,918 cwt., from Denmark 605,029, and from Australia 427,873 cwt. New Zealand and Australia show shrinkages, but there is an appreciable increase from Denmark. NEW ZEALAND APPLES IN ENGLAND. London, July 9.
