HEAT WAVE TAKES TOLL OF LIFE
HIGH TEMPERATURES IN STATES MUCH SUFFERING IN NEW YORK TORNADOES STRIKE MIDDLE WEST By telegbaph.—Press association. Copyeight. (Rec. July 11, 5.5 p.m.) New York, July 9. The United States is in the grip of a heat wave, which is taking toll. of life, particularly in large cities, with the thermometer still mounting. Nogales, Arizona, reported a temperature of 112 ‘degrees, while New York, with 91 degrees and high humidity, saw much suffering, particularly due to the congestion of subways owing to the strike. Thousands are sleeping in parks and crowding the beaches in an effort to get relief. Three persons are already reported dead and hundreds are prostrated Chicago reported 93 degrees of heat, with ten persons dead and many prostrated. The heat in many {.laces in the Middle West was accompanied by tornadoes. A storm swept through Indiana and Southern Michigan, tesulting in six deaths. The New England States also suffered much from heat, 98 degrees being reported at Springfield, Massachu-setts.—Aus.-N.Z. Cabla Assn. .
