ITEMS OF INTEREST Brocades from the Court of Louis. It might have been a disturbing thought to eighteenth centurv French gallants had it been suggested to them that their brocaded coats would be utilised to make handbags for twentieth centurv women. This, however, has come to pass (says an English paper), and some new handbags from Paris, on sale in Bond Street, are made from pieces of brocade cut from the coats which were once most probably worn in the salons of Versailles when the Louises reigned in France. The newest shape is the “Juliet” bag, heart shaped, and suspended from n silken handle. A silk loop with a brilliant, or a polished fragment of semi-precious stone, is the most usual fastening. It is said that th? bags which dangle from the wrist will rival the pochette both for dav and evening use, thereby implying that we shall no longer have nrtn-ache through clutching at the under-arm bag The square opening, which was potmint some years ago, recurs in -nnte new types in supple suede These in soft shades and fasb’onnl’le r-' 1 - ---- are gold-mounted with handle o! suede to match the bag.
