A large catch of crayfish was made by employees on White Island, when they were fishing off the island recently (says an exchange). By two hauls with the one pot or basket in about four and a half hours G 5 crayfish were captured. The first haul after the pot had been set for an hour produced 16. In the next haul 49 crayfish were secured. The unusual sight of the secretary of the Canterbury Acclimatisation Society appearing in the Police Court charged with a breach of the Arms Act, was witnessed when Charles W. Hervey pleaded guilty to charges of procuring possession of a firearm without being in possession of a permit, and of being in possession of a firearm for a longer period than seven days without being the registered owner of it (says rm exchange). It was explained that the Acclimatisation Society bought, a gnn at •he request of the Forestry Department for the purpose of killing deer. The gun was not used, but lay in the secretary’s office, as it was unsuitable for the purpose for which it was secured. Defendant waa fined 10s. on each charge.
