MAGISTRATE’S COURT

POLICE AND CIVIL CASES Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, SAI., presided in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. for a breach of his prohibition order, Isadora Jacobus was fined £l. He was also convicted and discharged for drunkenness. Patrick Carltofi McGill was fined £2 for a reach of his prohibition order. For an offence of drunkenness ho was convicted and discharged. "This man has been given probation on two previous occasions, and for that reason I am not prepared to give him a further chance. It seems to me ho has had his chance, but has thrown it, away. Tho present charge is one that cannot be viewed too lightly. Stealing from motor-cars is becoming very prevalent, and as a result motorists are put to considerable inconvenience." These remarks were made by Mr. Hewitt. 8.M., when convicting James Morton McGill, a motor salesman, aged 34, who stood in the dock charged with stealing a motor battery valued at £4, tho property of Frank Grucr, and also a motor battery valued at t.he same amount, belonging to the Todd Motor Company. Accused was sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labour on each charge, tho torms to be concurrent. A remand until July 16 was granted in the case of Hector Vincent Be Bobu. a clerk, aged 24, who appeared on tho charge of obtaining the sum of £3 19s. lid. from Young Toy. at Eastbourne, by falsely representing ho was collecting an insurance premium. Chief-Detective Ward stated that there were about 11 charges all told pending against the accused, Involving close on £4O On the application of Mr. W. E.
