DAYLIGHT SAVING BILL PASSED MR. SIDEYS VICTORY Paylight saving has found favour in the House of Representatives after many years, the consistency of Mr. T. K. Sidey (Dunedin South), the sponsor of tho Summer Time Bill, having been finally rewarded with a substantial measure of support from the House of Representatives. After This Dominion had gone to press yesterday morning, the House went into Committee on the Bill, and when tho operative clause was under consideration an amendment, moved by tho Leader of tho Opposition (Mr. H. E. Holland) was withdrawn on Mr. Sidey’s undertaking that he would submit to the lawdraughtsmen a clause providing that either parly to an indust lai agreement might apply to the Arbitration Court to vary the hours of work relating to the industry to which the agreement referred. . , A good deal of discussion ensued before the division was taken on the main clause, but at 2.15 am. members had the opportunity to walk. into the lobbies. The clause was retained by the same majority (35 to 18) as had been accorded the second reading. The Bill was accordingly reported to the House without amendment, read a third time and P The measure proposes to advance standard time in New Zealand by one hour during summer time, the period between the first Sunday in November to the first Sunday in March. The Act is to remain in force until September 30. ■J9°7 On previous occasions the chief opponents of the Bill have been country members, but yesterday a good proportion of them appeared among its strongest advocates..
