TARANAKI DEFEAT HAWKE’S BAY A VERY CLOSE GAME SHIELD-HOLDERS FIELD A POOR TEAM Hawera, July 7. Playing in fine weather, before an attendance of 6000, the Taranaki Rugby fifteen defeated Hawke’s Bay to-day by 5 points to 3. The game was a willing one, dominated mainly by the Taranaki forwards. The majority of Hawke’s Bay’s usual players were unable to make the trip, and the team was practically a B combination, Gemmell, Mahoney, and Wylie (forwards), and Grenside, L. Johnston and Harden (backs), being the only first-grade players, while five of the remainder were making their first representative appearance. With the advantage of the wind, Hawke’s Bay opened the first spell with dashing attacks, a nursing bout by L. Johnston and Grenside finishing in an unconverted try by McDonald. The Hawke’s Bay backs’ exploiting the wind, controlled play for half the spell, the home forwards retaliating by keeping the ball close, and narrowly failing to score on several occasions. In the second spell the Taranaki forwards forced the pace, dominating play in the first twenty minutes. Eventually Bourke went across for a try, which he converted, making the score: Taranaki, 5; Hawke’s Bay, 3. During the concluding stages the Hawke’s Bay rearguard played brilliantly, but were unable to score, mainly because of the sure tackling of the Taranaki backs.
