Rain early in the morning rendered the ground really unfit for the continuation of the match between Nottinghamshire and the Australians, but after the two captains had inspected the wicket they decided, notwithstanding a continuance of the drizzle, to attempt to finish the match. The attendance was under a hundred. The wicket was soft when the two not-out Notts batsmen, Payton and Staples, resumed their places at the wickets. Payton was taken at third man from the fifth ball of the first over without increasing his score Staples and Barratt made a short stand, the latter driving vigorously He hit Mailey for 6, but was then badly missed by Richardson dt mid-off. In the same over Staples should have been run out, but Oldfield failed to gather in the slippery ball. In Mailey’s next over, Staples skied a ball, and was easily held. Barratt after a couple more boundaries ofi Macartney, was taken by Richardson at mid-off. Forty minutes was sufficient to bring the game to an end, the Australians winning by an innings and 136 runs. Parkin (who har resigned from the Lancashire Club), in an interview stated that he had been treated well, but was fed up by a succession of unpleasant incidents.
