CITY COUNCIL

SPECIAL MEETING TO APPOINT RETURNING OFFICER.

A special meeting of the City Council will be held at 3 o’clock this afternoon to appoint a returning officer for the Wellington City Council, in succession to Mr. James Ames, who lately retired from that office after over half a century’s service. The new returning officer will act at an election to fill two vacancies. According to the Electoral Act, such appointment has to be made by the local body , concerned; that is to say, the office is one that cannot be handed on from one to another at the whim of any Mayor or town clerk.
