TRAMWAYS BAND CONCERT

« Lively appreciation of the good faro provided at His Majesty's Theatre last night was shown by the crowded house which han assembled to listen to the fifth concert given by tho Wellington Municipal Tramways Band, assisted by an exceptionally strong company of supporting artists. Perhaps the greatest hit was the hymn, “Like as the Hart” (Novello), which the band rendered in a masterly manner, under the perfect contirol of Mr. H. Berry. The next number was Rachmaninoff’s prelude in 0 sharp major, which was also played very finely indeed. Miss Ruth Reid surprised ail by her ability in playing the violin, her solo, "Thais” meditation (Massenett), being remarkable for its richness and quality of tone. The most popular item of all during tho whole performance was that of William Beresford (tenor), whose “When You Como Home” was beautifully sung, and won great applause. “Oberon," a grand selection from. Weber, showed the band to be composed of highly trained musicians, who played anything they attempted remarkably well. “Ten Minutes Entertainment’ provided scope for Mr. Norman Aitken to display his humour and sadness in many dialogues, which lie did to tho delight of all. "Hugo, I Go Where You Go” introduced Mr. .Hilton Osborne, who possessed a remarkably fine baritone voice. Ho sang very well indeed, and with Mr. Beresford also on the programme, the concert was a great success so far as singing was concerned. “La Russe," a march (Rimmer) was perhaps the finest number given by tho band. With a great swintr to the tunc the clever musicians made tho most of it. and under tho guidance of Mr. Berry, it was an inspiring number. Altogether the programme v.-as exceedingly popular, the entertainment given for t>, Sunday being something out of the ordinary. Besides tho band, which sunplied the best of music, other tastes were also catered for. Although the Tramways Band has given several fine entertainments of late, last night’s was perhaps the most popular- of all, and delighted the large crowd.
