MESOPOTAMIA

EARLY EVACUATION BY BRITAIN POSSIBLE AS RESULT OF TREATY WITH TURKEY (Rec. June 7, -7.15 p.m.) London, June 7. The “Daily Chronicle” states that as a result ol the Mosul Treaty Britain will be able to evacuate Mesopotamia well within four years after the ratification of peace with Turkey in August, 1924. By the new treaty the Government has retrieved the . blunder of the commitment of further indeterminate occupation. ' Mr. Martin Donohoe, correspondent of the “Chronicle,” expresses the opinion that industrial "and mineral developments will receive a stimulus now that the ever-present spectre has been laid. The question exists whether an oil pipe running through Mosul across the Syrian desert to a Palestine port can be profitably laid in view of the possibility of a Turkish petroleum company striking oil in the Mosul area.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. CONVENTION SIGNED AT ANGORA Constantinople, June 6. The Mosul Convention was signed at Angora at midnight. It upholds the Brussels Line with a slight modification at one point in favour of Turkey, and maintains a demilitarised zone ol 75 kilometres on either side of the TurcoIraq frontier. Turkey gets a tenth share of royalties due to the Iraq Government from' all oil in Iraq.—Reuter.
