SCOUT NOTES
(By "fieouter.**) The first of a series of monthly meetings for patrol-leaders of Wellington South district was held at St, Thomas b ■and unanimously voted a huge success. Lyall Bay, Island Bay, St. Cuthbert’s, and Institute Troops were well represented. Various competitions were held and were won by Boys’ Institute and Lyall Bay. A short talk by the District Scoutmaster (Mr. Bell) an J supper at 9.30 p.m. brought this first gathering to a fitting conclusion. Leader Campbell, of Island Bay Troop, was ejected to the position of honorary secretary, and the next gathering was fixed for June 26/ The St. Culhbert’B Troop held their second Friday parade last Friday week, when two new members were enrolled. The evening was devoted to usual Scout work and concluded by an interesting competition, which was won by Scout A. Linnegan. A patrol competition was started, in which the Kiwi Patrol has a slight lead over thei rtwo rivals. At last week’s parade arrangements were made for a friendly visit to Khandallah. A church parade, with the Girl Guides, was held , last Sunday week, when Rev. G. Barnett preached a very interesting sermon to all present. * Two fine model tents with typical camp surroundings made by East Harbour Troop have been placed in the “Den.” This is a good beginning for the first month of the second year of the “Den,” and much is expected of the new committee. A general meeting of the residents of Kaiwarra was held last week. There wits a good attendance of parents and others interested in the movement. Mr. George Flaws (chairman. Troop Committee) presided, and opened the meeting bp calling upon Mr. R. E. Flaws, who clearly outlined the work which has already been done by tha troop. The scoutmaster then spoke on the Scout movement, when it first commenced, meaning of various badges, etc., and put the lads through a numbeir of practices. We desire to thank Mesdames Taylor, de Roufiignac. and Misses H. Flaws, <J. Campbell and J. Palmer for their assistance with the supper arrangements. The following were elected to form the Troop Committee: Mr. George Flaws (chairman), Miss D. Hansen (secretary), Mesdames Hansen, de Roufiignac, Misses M. Flaws, O. Campbell, D. Cooze. M. Row, J. Paler and A. Row, Messrs. R. Cameron, H. Adams, de Roufiignac G. Harris and H. Meachen. With this keen, enthusiastic committee the troop should go ahead in leaps and bounds. East Harbour Scouts and Cubs met in the Scout Room on Friday week, there was a good muster. The occasion was an examination for two-star Cubs, tenderfoot and second-class work, which resulted in Ivan Munro and Hugh Bettie getting their two star a, the Scouts B. Blair, A. Andrews, tenderfoot- and Scouts F. Reid, F. Jones, J. Evans. K. Shearer. M. Blaokie and A. Walling obtaining their second-class badge. District Scoutmaster Nelson. Assistant Scoutmasters Brown, Zambra, Aldrick and Oubmaster Bugg acted as examiners. After the various tests supper was provided by the Scouts and a very enjoyable evening resulted. The Island Bay Troop has now closed its “King Carnival,” and thank all those who in any way assisted with the effort, especially Mrs. Whiteford, Mrs. Godley and helpers, and Mr. J. F. Brailey and helpers. Hot overlooking the following lads: Patrol-Leaders 0. Godley. W. Brailey and late Second W. Whiteford. Th<? troop is now to commence a campaign for the purpose of purchasing a small motion picture machine: it is to hold moving pictures every Friday night., The troop has now made a start on their item for the indoor display, which will take the form of living statuary, on a much bigger scale than last year. Island Bay would welcome visits from other troops. Port Nicholson Sea Scouts have now brought back their boat from the east side of the harbour, where it has been since Easter. Tn* “Gordon Campbell”, will soon be due for overhaul and will bo dry-docked for the winter and more attention paid to the boat in course of construction. The committee have decided to give a dance social evening on June 22. If you see a Scout wearing a fawn scarf with a blue border you will know he conus from Seatoun. The troop is now about six weeks old but has 15 tenderfoots. Many of these are keen to -ftirt on the second-class work. The troop are going to have a patrol football tournament very shortly so as to be in training tor the Association matches.
District Commissioner Grigsby, Auckland, paid a visit. to the “Den” recently. He signed the attendance book and was very interested in the “Den” fixtures, also in the work a patrol of the Cambridge Terrace Troop was doing at the time. Roseneath Troop held their Scout night in the “Den” recently. The Commissioner was pleased to find so young a troop so well turned out and so forward in their tests and Scout law.
