FARMING PROBLEMS
Sir—We have read with great into, est numerous letters relating to farmin’, problems in general, and ihe cost m production in particular. In a r ®ce" t weekly paper there was an article headed: "A New Kicking Off. Place for Farmers.” referring to the inflated vMuo of land amongst other things. The Government have often been blamed for causing the land booms through paying too high a price for land for soldier settlements." W e consider they forced into that by public opinion, but realising their mistake have those values, and so Riven the soldiers their “new kicking off place. There are other farmers on Government land, who through various causes were unable to go to the war so did not benefit bv the Government s generous action.' We refer to the men. who have taken up bush sections in the la ? t teri o. twelve wars. During the war it was impossible to get men to fell bush, Tnd in the slump it was just as impossible to R et money to pay for any being felled, but rent, rates, interest, etc“ 2 had to be paid. In Mr. Seddon s time under the Bush and Swamp Act a settler taking up a bush section was allowed exemption of rent for a certan time to give him a chance, also the un improved value was low, and the cost of breaking in country not half as high, os it is to-day. Under the present circumstances is there anv flock to the cities and will not fai« the hardships of the back-blocks, badtacks dangerous river crossings and nothing to look forward too «c®Pt doSurely these men could also bogiven “a new kicking off place.” S.O.S. n ‘HVOOL KINGS" (I don’t think).
