ROLL DOWN GAME

FINE INFLICTED IN AUCKLAND. By Telegraph.-I'russ Association Auckland, May 28. Following upon a visit by a Magistrate and several detectives to premises at 236 Queen Street, when a demonstration of the “roll down” game was given, the proprietor, Ivan Rougo Chambeilaiu (represented by Mr. Hall Skelton), was charged with playing a game of chance. Chief-Detective Cummings said that in view of the circumstances defendant had decided to admit that the game could legally be classed as one containing an element of chance, and to plead guilty. Mr. Skelton said that he could call evidence to show that with practice the balls could be placed in correct places nine times out of ten. The game was commonly plaved a t the Dunedin Exhibition, and was now established all over the country. The Magistrate: I understand that it is different as plaved here. Mr. Skelton: The only difference is that the boards used at the exhibition were flat and these balls are larger. The chief detective: The balls are not true. It is a bushman’s game. Mr. Skelton: These men have only just started, and are going to lose about £3OO. , , The Magistrate: The man has pleaded guilty and put us to no trouble. From the appearance of the apparatus this is a game of chance, and if the others do not ston I will impose the full penalty Of £5O, in default three months’ imprisonment. Defendant will be fined £2, with costs.
