EASTBOURNE BOROUGH

4 SATISFACTORY BALANCESHEET “There is no seaside resort in England that has as good potentialities as Eastbourne, I am quite confident that the dawn of a new era is fast approaching, and that in a few years’ time the Borough of Eastbourne will be one of the most flourishing in the Dominion.” The above statements were made by Councillor Dawson at a meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council last night, when the annual balance-sheet was presented “I want to take this opportunity,” said the Mayor, Mr. H. M. Jones, “of congratulating our administrative stall on the manner in which the balancesheet was drawn up. Our balance-sheet is the first that has been released by the Department this year, and that speaks volumes for the work accomplished by our general manager and his staff.’ The balance-sheet showed that the general account had been reduced from a debit of £1342 (1925) to a debit of £465 (1926). This debit balance had been still further reduced by £167, which the council advanced towards the purchase of the old Rona Bay tennis courts with the consent of the audit officer. The ferry trading account showed that last year there had been a debit balance of £lOBO. This year there had been a credit of £-101, showing that the running costs had been reduced by at least £l4OO to £l5OO during the last year. The debit balance of £7OBO on the profit and loss account had been reduced to £6162. The Mayor said he was pleased to state that the debit account had been reduced by almost two-thirds,' and he hoped that it would only be a short time before the amount would be wiped out. “Although we are disappointed with the showing on the balance-sheet,” he added, "one must take into consideration the fact that we were confronted with unprecedented difficulties. We have had bus competition to contend with, and the unfavourable weather which prevailed throughout the year materially affected the financial positlon ( so far as the ferry service is concerned.” Other councillors spoke in complimentary' terms of the council’s administrative staff, and a vote of thanks in appreciation of the services of Mr. Menzies was carried unanimously.
