PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL

FORTNIGILTEY AIEETING. The fort nightly meeting of the I’etone Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr. J. W. McEwan) presiding. Others present were: Councillors C. I’. Bi’ocklebmik, D. McCarthy, A. Scholefield, A. Campbell, AV. IL Ldwiirds, 11. Jay, V. Jacobsun, G. Cook, and J. W. Sharpe. A letter was received from the secretary to the Governor-General conveying a message from His Majesty the King expressing thanks for the council’s resolution of sympathy upon the occasion of the death' of Her Majesty the I'ato Queen Alexandra. , The acting town clerk of AA ellington wrote asking the council to put thp surface of Cuba Street in order as soon as possible so that the City and Suburban Highways Board might carry out tho work of paving this season. It was decided to inform the acting town clerk that the council had already let a contract for the work, which they had decided to do themselves. A letter was received from the Rev. J. A. Lochoro protesting against tne council’s decision to make Nelson Street a parking place for cars as that spot was right in front of the _ AVesleynn Church and would greatly disturb the church services given. The matter was held over pending a report by the Ixirough inspector. Discussing the financial position, the Mayor said that the balance-sheet of the council for the year showed that ,£21,150 had come into their bands. Rates paid into the council amounted to <£9610, while heavy traffic fecsyhnd brought in £1836. The debit balance for th.e year showed <£3S76 against £2007 for the previous twelve months. “All things considered,, we have done very well,” commented the Mayor. “As a matter of fact, .we have done better than it wiis expected we should do. Tho council has purchased a cottage for £9OO, while tho Ak.itarawa block ran us into .£3OO. All this goes to show the progress we have made.” ' A letter was received from Hie Wellington Rugby Union pointing out that as the Railway Department had taken over the playing ground _ used over (ho stop bank, it was desired to ascertain whether thy council could provide any other ground. It was decided to reply stating that: no other playing ground was available for the purpose' at tho present tiino.
