COLD-MIX AT PETONE

CUBA STREET NORTH BEING SURFACED An interesting experiment is being made at I’etone by the Borough Council It may be remembered that at the last meeting of the Wellington and Suburban Highways Construction Board the Mayor of Petone (Mr. J. W. McEwan) made it very clear that if the board could not find it convenient to surface Cuba Street, from Jackson Street northward to the Lower Hutt boundary, the Petone Borough Council would do the work itself. The intimation caused some surprise, for the pav-. ing of that length of Cuba Street was not upon the official schedule for the season, and there was no particular reason why this very good stretch of road should 'receive attention before any other road not on the schedule. At the meeting, the city engineer (Mr. A. J. Paterson) was asked whether this work could be undertaken, as itr was desirable that the roads of the district should be paved in the “official” hotmix the board is using. Mr. Paterson said that it could only be done if the gang now employed on the Day’s Bayroad were transferred to Petone, for the end of the season was fast approaching. When consulted as to that procedure, Mr. A. I Mackay (chairman of the Hutt County Council) strenuousIv objected to the gang being taken off the only bit of Hutt County roads that was receiving attention at the hands of the board. This meant an impasse, and as the result the Petone Borough Council lias since accepted a tender from' a northern firm to pave the road in question with 2) inches of cold-mix, and the work is now proceeding. Presumably the laying of cold-mix is not affected by temperature, as is the case with . hot-mix, for the work will take some little time. The experiment will be watched with interest, as it may be a valuable guide as to what work may be done with another mix under conditions that preclude the laying down of a hot-mix surface.
