CUTTER RACE AT PETONE
HOLDERS RETAIN CUP. The strong northerly wind made the water a trifle rough for the outter race for the White Horse Cup between Petone (holders) and 15th Battery (challengiers) on the Petone foreshore on Saturday afternoon. The Battery crew were taken over in the Government steamer Janie Seddon. The crews were constituted os follow:— Petone: F. Ryan (cox), W. Sharon (str), J. Pecini, and G. Johnson (5), L. Price and H. G. Shaa-dlow (4); G. Fraser and G. H. Seiwood (3); B. Tremain and E. W. H. Gjersen (2); P, J. Sherwood (bow). Wellington: Lieut. C. Williamson (cox), N. Portman (str.), Isaacs and W. Stewart (5); W. Rowell and I. Thomas (4); J. May and R. Partridge (3); N. Goldie and N. Brown (2), and J Scanlon (bow) The course rowed w r as from the sandhills to the Navals’ Club, a distance of two miles. Captain Abel sent the crews away on level terms, and they rowed stroke for stroke for a time. Gradually, however, the Petone crew, who were moving well, forged ahead, and woi? comfortably by five lengths. The time taken was 12min. Lieutenant Mason acted as judge. After the race the crews assembled at the Navals’ shed, when Mrs. Taylor presented the cup to the Petone team. Mr. T. Ryan, who received the cup on behalf of the Petone crew, thanked Mrs. Taylor for her complimentary references to the crew. Mr. B Tremain also congratulated both crews on the praiseworthy form they had displayed.
