Wanganui, April 10. The opening ceremony of the Tawhero School, Gonville, was performed this afternoon by Mr. W. Collins (chairman of the Education Board). The building has fifteen acres of grounds. ■ Several building experts present pronopneed it as one of the best finished schools they had seen. The attendance at present is only 140, but will soon increase, as the school will take the overflow from tho Gonville School, which is limited to 650 pupils. A successful bazaar was held during tho afternoon to raise funds for the improvement of the grounds, which aro in a rough state. The Mayor (Mr. Hope Gibbons) arrived later in the afternoon and planted the first tree. This morning the school teachers of tho Wanganui district held a gathering to honour two of their inspectors, Mr. R Ryder, who has retired on superannuation, and Mr. F. Stuckey, who has been transferred to Dunedin. A large number of teachers w.ere present, and all spoke highly of the inspectors and the respect in which they were held by the teachers of tho district. Replying, Mr. Ryder asked the teachers to keep work as their watchword. Mr. Stuckey also expressed appreciation for the good wishes, and thanked them for the loyal co-operation of the past. On behalf of the teachers, Miss Sampson (president of tho Teachers’ Institute) presented the inspectors each with a AVanganui-made travelling rug. The death occurred yesterday morning at her husband’s residence at Martofi of Mrs. AV. J. Aynsley after a proion"cd illness of many months, the deceased lady was highly respected, and her funeral this afternoon was largely attended by a wide circle of friends. The annual Wanganui sports were held this afternoon, under excellent weather conditions. There was a record crowd. Good entries wore received toY all the events, and many close finishes were witnessed. A football match, nlavcd between Kaierau and Mangaelr.i. served as a draw to the sports meetinc' . Tho Wangaehu team put up a good fight against their more experienced opponents, and after an interesting game the Wanganui team came out victorious by 11 points to nil. The opening of the Sooner season took place in Wanganui to-day when two senior grade games were played. Workshons defeated the new team, Thistle, bv 2 goals to nil.
