CHESS
AALADESTOWN V. NGAIO. The return match between the Wadestown Chess Circle and the Ngaio Chess Club was' played at Wadestown. A cordial welcome was extended to the visitors by’ Mr. H. Godtschalk, the local captain, to which Mr. F. J". Brooker, the Ngaio president, replied. After an exciting finish the AVadestown representatives had the pleasure of winning what is believed to be the first chess match ever played in their suburb. As Ngaio won the previous contest by one game, honours are now easy. The full score of the recent match is as follows:— AVadestown. Ngaio.
A special vote of thanks was accorded to’ the ladies who provided supper. With players like Messrs. J. P. Firth, J. K. Perry and P. Oruberg living in.Madestown, the local “circle” has good prospects of “going qno better’.’ and becoming a club, with affiliation to the Wellington Chess League. MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. The sixth tourney to decide the chess championship of Australia and New Zealand was scheduled to begin in Sydney on .April 3. There are ten competitors and £lOO is being divided in prizes. New Zealand is not contributing a competitor on this occasion, but the players of the Dominion are following the play with much interest, as three New Zealand champions who reside in New South AVales, are taking part, ' viz., Messrs. Viner, Crakantlwrp and Purdy. The next mail from Australia should bring news regarding the play in the earlier rounds. The annual meeting of the Wellington Chess League is to be held at an early date. It is possible that the league’s annual “North v. South” matoh will bo played a month or so later than usual this year, in order to fit in with the Wellington Chess Club’s jubilee celebrations. The Wellington Chess Club’s monthly committee meeting was held last week, when it was decided to at once invite entries for four tourneys, viz., senior, intermediate, junior and “Petheriek” (handicap). The advisableness of substituting tables for trestles was urged, and so far nine members have promised to donate a table each. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Air. G. Wigham for presenting six new inlaid chess boards, the workmanship of which was greatly admired. The club’s Rules Revision Committee have prepared their report, which is to be submitted to a special general meeting. The present rules have been out of print for many years.
