COASTAL DISPUTE

NEW AUSTRALIAN SEAMEN’S UNION STEAMSHIP OWNERS OPPOSE OLD BODY By Tulegrai’ii.—Press Association. Copybight Sydney, April 8. The new seamen’s union, known as the New South Wales Coastal Seamen and Firemen’s Union, has been registered. The attitude of the coastal steamship owners towards the members oi the Federated Seamen’s Union has been that, while they are members of a union which governs or'controls both inter-State and coastal steamers, the seamen on the coast of New South Wales are not their own masters, as far as the union is concerned, for the reason that in matters affecting purely their own State they are outvoted by those employed in mter-State trade. The Coastal Steamship Owners’ Association has informed the old union that so long as the body remains as it is at present constituted and under its present leaders, it does not propose to re-engage union men.—Press Assn.

WATERSIDERS WORK WITH VOLUNTEERS (Rec. April 8 ,11.50 p.m.) Sydney, April 8. Members of the Waterside Workers’ Federation have commenced working coastal steamers, working with volunteers. This marks the end of the coastal strike for the watersiders concerned.—Press Assn.
