SPEECH WITH SOUTH ISLAND

WELLINGTON BUSINESS MEN USE NEW CABLE So far telephonic communication between Wellington and tlie South Island in the daytime is limited to speech with Seddon, Blenheim, Picton, and Nelson. Owing to the amplifying apparatus not having been shipped from England yet, it is ' doubtful whether the radius of operation will be extended for another four months, as after the machinery arrives it has to be erected and tested, and possibly other amplifiers will be needed further south than Seddon in order to put the North Island into communication with Southland. The new telephone cable is being used a good deal by business people.in Wellington who are concerned with Blenheim and Nelson. One morning this week there were thirty calls, and as there were no complaints, it . was judged that the service was giving satisfaction ; but in the official mind the strength of messages is still capable of improvement.
