PETONE AFFAIRS

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS. The Petone Borough Council met last night, the Mayor (Mr. J. W McEwan) presiding. From the secretary of the Wellington Education Board a letter wan received asking for the - council’s decision in respect to an application to build the infant department of the Petone West School in wood. On the motion of Councillor C. P. Broeklehank it was decided to advise the secretary to the hoard that the council could not be inconsistent in breaking the by-law to permit of the erection of a wooden structure. That subscription lists be opened to raise funds to provide additional beds in connection with the Rockefeller foundation made to the London University College Hospital, was urged i:i a letter from the Prime Minister. The Mayor expressed the view that the Government should have given the small amount of £3OCO in the interests of pub ic health. He was dubious about the result of opening any subscription lists. It was decided to open the lists. No action was taken regarding a letter from the Hutt County Council asking that co-operation be given in opposing the letting of cutting rights over a portion of the Akatarawa Reserve. A communication from Mr. J. Stollin, of Wellington, concerning the council s street widening scheme, was referred to a special committee.
