SHIPMENT OF APPLES FRUITGROWERS’ CLAIM FALLS. London, March 2C. The appeal of fruitgrowers against the decision of the Lower Court in an action against shipping companies over the alleged negligent transport of apples, was dismissed by a majority of the Court of Appeal with costs. Mr. Justice Bankes, in his judgment, said that there was no ground for imputing to shipowners any want of care in reference to the provision of ventilation in ships’ holds. There was evidence that the fruit had been left in the tree too long, and that might have had a material effect in producing hu.<-’ tibility to the "brown heart” di ease Mr. Justice Scrutton concurred. Mr. Justice Atkin differed, hotdiiq that appellants had csfnh ,: s l ’o- 1 Levon-' dorbt that damage to the apples was caim'd during transit-ZJIS.-M.Z. Cabl“ Afßll.

WOOL SEASON—I92S-26 A REVIEW The wool season of 1925-36 will be pleasantly remembered for the general stability of the market. Ever since the sales held in December prices have Loen steady. Between the months or May and December last year the wool market was unsatisfactory, for there was a lack of confidence, and, furthermore, buyers of the previous season s clips were counting their losses. rhe season opened in Wellington on November 16, when a small quantity of wool was submitted. At the Ea !®.. l A= W nt noticeable that the representatives ot Continental houses secured the. bulk <1 the offerings, their limits being well aibove those of Bradford buyers. German and French representatives were very active. Values, however, were much below the March or closing sales of the previous season. Fine crossbreds 46-48’s, showed a decline ot Ji<lor 19.44 per cent.; medium crossbreds,, 44-46’s, a decline of 2sd. or 16. K p®’ cent.; coarse crossbreds, 40-44 s, declined 4d. or 19.05 per cent.; and low crossbreds, 36-40’s, were lower by 4jd. or 30 pct cent. The second sale was held on December 11 and 12 and prxees showed a decline on November rates, and there were rather heavy withdrawals. The wool offered was not up to the average of December offerings, for although light in grease and of good colour, there was a marked tendeiness and thinness of staple. lhe drop in prices brought values to within the range of Bradford’s limits, with the lesiilt that Bradford buyers, were able to take a more active part in the bidding. France, Germany and Italy rendered the market considerable support, and America bid for the super crossbreds suitable for her market. However there was a disposition on the part' of growers to meet the market, and over 90 per cent, of the offering was cleared m some >-oses and less in others. The third sale of the season was held on January 22 and 23, and a marked feature was the keen competition of American buyers for super crossbreds, and fortunately this grade of wool was in fair supply. Under Amencan competition super crossbreds advanced Id. to lid., and selling as high as I6d Bradford took the bulk of the average quality medium crossbreds, the Continent obtaining a fair share. The market showed an improvement on the December rates for most grades of wool At the February sale it was evident that Bradford was satisfied that the market had about reached bedrockat all events the Yorkshire representatives were very active. The demand for wool, however, was general, riving evidence of restored confidence. There was no particular movement in prices, which were up to the January parity. The last sale of the season, held at the week-end, showed an improved tendency in fine wools, with crossbreds up to the February level. The prices at the closing sales of 1925 and 1926 show as under for average qualities:—
