ROSE IN THE NORTH “Dominion” . Special. Wanganui, March 2b. A meeting was lieki yesterday by the Waitolara Amateur Athletic Club. The chief attraction was the appearance of R„ A. Hose in tho mile event. The Masterton Turner was given a tine :e--eeption on arriving on the ground, and again as he stopped on the mark, lie conceded starts up to two hundred yards. Rose reduced the difference consistently throughout the race, but it was not until two hundred yards from home that he passed the majority of tho competitors. On entering the straignt Brant was still some 15 yards ahead, but, finishing strongly, the champion won by three yards in 4min. 30 2-ssec. A number of Wanganui miners competed at the meeting. W. Mitchell won the hundred and furlong handicaps, C. Rosser the quiu ter-mile, and Pawson tho half-mile. . At the conclusion of the meeting the Rev. Kelly presented the trophies, and thanked Rose for accepting the invitation to compete. In the evening Rose competed at tui athletic gathering at Cook’s Gandcns. There was a record attendance, and the track was in. excellent condition. lhe heats of the hundred yards were the first events, the final being won by G. Broad (7yds.) in ton seconds. Morgan (Syds.) was second, nnd Mitehell 'Sycs.j third. Morgan (80yds.), won tho halfmile in 2min. 2 3-ssec. I'ho scratch man, Newton, was second, and although he ran well, he could not catch the limit man. In the mile cycle race the two scratch men kept togetner nil tho wiiv Frierson Ivuding I’oss bv inalics in the final dash in 2min. 31 2-ssee There was a big field for the furlong, Morgan (18vds.)- winning the final in 23sec. Before the mile race commenced Mr. Cohen introduced Rose to the gathering, the crowd greeting him with a loud cheer. The champion gave away starts up to 196yds., but very soon started to gather in his men, several of whom dropped out after being passed by tho champion. On entering the fourth round. Gibbons (60yds.) was the only man ahead of Rose, and he made a very determined effort to. keep ahead, remaining in the van until about two hundred yards from home. Ro:«‘ was not pushed thereafter and won easily in 4tnin. 27 l-ssec, with Gibbons a few yards behind. The quarter-mile was won in a closg finish by Preston (26yds.), with yewton (scr.) a yard behind, in 51 2-ssec. In the inter-dub relay race Wanganui beat Y.M.C.A. by about 15yds.
