MARRIAGE MARKET
COMMERCIALISATION OF ENGAGEMENTS JUDGE’S SEVERE COMMENT Bt Telegraph — PrXss Association. OoPyrigHt. (Rec. March 28, 5.5 p.m.) London, March 27. Another Jewish breach of promise case, in which Mr. Justice Macardie adjudicated, was responsible for further comments on the commercialisation of modem engagements. The evidence .revealed that in Jewish circles nnvbodv introducing a young couple who subsequently married was entitled to commission, the extent of .which depended on the financial situation of the married couple. . . Mr. Justice 'Macardie, in summing.up, said that the case cast a vivid light on modern social conditions and matrimonial ideals. They had an increasing bearing on the family and the welfare of the nation. The law seemed to disregard the spiritual, ethical, und sociological aspects of marriage, and engagements were degraded to the status of a mere commercial bargain. Juries were compelled to undertake the unfortunate task of assessing a man’s worth in the marriage market He could not help thinking that the task was similar to those of assessors in Eastern slave markets. —Ans.-N.Z.
