RUGBY

> GRADING OF JUNIOR TEAMS

At the meeting of the Wellington Rugbv Union last evening the following letter was received from the Junior Advisory Committee in regard to the grading of junior teams: —“As you arc aware, there were too many teams in the junior grades last season, except perhaps intermediate, to play a tun round, and as the number of lads playing Rugbv is increasing each year, the position is likely to become worse this year. . “The matter has received serious consideration from this committee, which has 'decided to recommend that where the number of teams entered in any of the junior grades exceeds lb in future, the competition be plaved in A nnd B‘divisions, and into A, B, ana c divisions where a grade contains oO or more teams, and that each division be regarded as a distinct champion'"wvhile this matter was under discussion, the matter of a senior B competition was also mentioned and considered, as a means .of rehe\ ing . the junior grade, also to enable older plac-ers-to participate in senior football in cases where their clubs were unable to ente? a team in the present senior comnetition, or where they were not now quite good enough to gam a place in the first fifteen of the club. “As this, however, might be regarded as outside the province of the committee it was decided not to make a recommendation, but members themselves in favour of the establish n ent of a senior B competition, and suggested that. entries be invited for that grade next season, and if there are still an odd number of teams in the senior A (present senior competition) that one of them be transferred to the senior B, if Considered'desirable. “The’idea of the committee was that the suggested senior B competition should be limited to 'eight teams for a start; that plavers in the B grade should be eligible for senior representative honours; and that.the lowest team in senior A and the. highest in senior B at the' end of the season should exchange places for the _ following year. It . was eventually decided to set up sub-committee, c’onsistiug of the chairman. Mr. J. Prendeville, the secretary, Mr. A. Neilsen, and.-- Messrs. Murphy and J. W. Millard, to bring down a report on the proposal to have a senior B grade. The report will be considered bv a special meeting of th’ committee on March 2.
