THRILLS ON WHEELS

MURIWAI MOTOR SPORTS R. B. WILSON WINS THE CUP By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, February 14. The motor races at Muriwai Beach provided exciting sport. The contest lor the New Zealand Motor Cup was a spectacular event. The cars got away well to a slow moving start and were soon out of sight down the beach. Coming back to the turn flag at the ■ompletion of the first lap, Haydon's Ford was leading Hamilton’s Sunbeam, with the Stutz and Hamilton's other Sunbeam (driven by W ills) next. Lord went straight on, instead of turnin" at the flag, and withdrew’ from the race. The two Sunbeams and the Stutz all made good turnings close, up, while the Mercer, Hudson and Messenger’Special all came along at intervals of about a minute. The last-named withdrew from the ince. Then the Bugatti put in an appearance, but also withdrew. In the second lap the Stutz led bv about 200 yards from the Sunbeam driven by Wills, with Hamilton’s other Sunbeam very close up. The Mercer showed up two minutes later, ' but did not go on with the race, leaving only the Stutz, the two Sunbeams, and the Hudson in the contest, the Hudson being hopelessly out of the race. In the third lap the Stutz was still in the lead, and, if anything, was drawing further away from Wills’s Sunbeam. Hamilton’s Sunbeam fell behind considerably, but was easily two minutes abend of the Hudson.' After tho cars had been gone nbnut eight minutes, the Stutz could be seen well down the beach on its own. The Stutz crossed the finishing line seventeen seconds ahead of the Sunbeam. driven by Wills, with the other Sunbeam Imin. 2sec. behind. The third Hudson was the only other car to finish.
