BOWLS
BRITISH TEAM ENTERTAINED t 'The'Wellington Centre entertained the British bowlers at a smoke concert in the Concert Chamber last night, the gathering proving one of the most suc- ' cessful on record. In proposing the toast of "The Visitors," the president of the centre (Mr. S. JI. Stone), congratulated the team—a pioneer bowling party—on being able to go back home with the balance of wins in their favour. Apart from the. bowling aspect, the tour was valuable , since it helped to strengthen that bond of unity between the Mother Country and the Dominion. In reply Hr. G. Wright, captain of British team, referred to the splendid way they had been received and hospitably entertained; indeed, they had been looked after from beginning to end like favoured children. He hoped the time was not far distant when another team from New Zea- ' »land would visit the Old Country. Tho bowlers at the Dominion tournament at Dunedin, he said, were too good and keen for them, and the tournament system in Now Zealand was too strenuous for Englishmen. Personally he liked the knock-out, sudden-death system of England, but ho could realise with the long distances travelled in New Zealand it was too much to ask bowlers to come and be knocked out in the first round. Mr. Wright said that the ' gentleman Who had had most to do with the arrangements of the tour was the Wellington Centre’s secretary, Mr. Shalit crass, and on behalf of the visiting team he presented Mr. Shallcrass with a silver cigarette box. Mr. Shallcrass 'suitably acknowledged the presentation. Music, vocal, and elocutionary items were supplied by Messrs. Norman Aitken, Barton Ginger, Len Barnes, A. R. Brockenshire, M. Marks, J. A. Doherty, R. R. Orr, Mayall and Laycock. Mr. Frank Thomas presided at the pianoforte. During tho evening centre badges were handed, to the visitors ns a memento of their visit to Wellington. • SECTION WINNERS AT ROTORUA Br Telegraph.—Press Association. Rotorua, February 11.
