LAWN TENNIS
THE AMATEUR STATUS
LABOUR JOURNAL’S FRANK COMMENTS
(Rcc. February 11, 5.5 p.m.) London, February 11. The "Daily Herald,” in an editorial, states: "The absurd pretence is kept up that lawn tennis players whose performances are of interest to the public throughout the world are amateurs. It is supposed that somehow the game would deteriorate and they would lose caste if. they admitted that their expenses are paid***with a bit over. Some, it seems, are hired by tennis ball makers to pnsb sales; others have arrangements with film companies and some write for newspapers or allow their names to appear at tho top of articles. Why not squash the scandal and admit that the most famous tennis players are really professionals? It is only antiquated prejudice to find anything derogatory in such a course. ’ -Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. CARLTON TOURNAMENT COMMERCIAL ASPECT OF COMPETITION. (Rec. February 11, 5.5 p.m.) New York, February 10. The United Str as Lawn Tennis Association has officiary notified Miss Helen Wills that she may continue to play in the Carlton tournament, despite the commercial aspect of the oom.' petition.—Roster.
