SUGAR BEET INDUSTRY

PROGRESS IN BRITAIN. London, February 9. The progress of the sugar beet industry in Britain under Government support was the subject of a report by Mr. W. E. Guinness, Minister of Agriculture, in the House of Commons. The Minister stated that the approximate. acreage for growth was now 128,000 acres. This was almost sufficient to keep the fifteen factories built, or shortly to be completed, at full capacity. Two new factory, schemes were being considered, and therefore separate acreage arrangements would be made. The gross subsidy paid to this industry for the last financial year was £509,000.' It was estimated that £1,250.000 would be paid in the current year, and £2,500,000 next year.—Reuter.
