Cornplaints are occasionally heard from shopkeepers that spurious coins are passed over to them, but seldom is such a barefaced act perpetrated as was done to the gatekeepers at a fireworks display in Gisborne recently (states the "Poverty Bay Herald”). The light at tlfe gate was not particularly good, and on counting up the £1 notes the following morning it was found that someone had passed in a Canadian dollar bill and had collected 18s. Gd. in change. The bill, although considerably different from the £1 notes in use, had some points of resemblance, and the substitution would be easy under the conditions obtaining on that evening.
