EXPLOSION IN BERLIN
COLLAPSE OF FOURSTORIED HOUSE
SEVERAL PEOPLE KILLED AND MANY INJURED
Berlin, January 18. A shattering detonation, due to the explosion of gas and petrol, . aroused the residents of the Moabit district of Berlin early in the morning. A fourstoried house collapsed like a pack of cards, burying its occupants under eight feet of debris. The whole street was a scene of wild destruction. A motor-car was hurled some distance away and smashed to pieces.. All the windows in the neighbourhood were broken, and the window frames left hanging over the streets. The fire brigade, working feverishly, was momentarily threatened with further collapses of loosened masonry. The explosion was caused by an escape of gas, which took fire and spread to a chandler’s shop, where it ignited a barrel of benzine. The house was inhabited by twentyfive families. Forty persons so far have been extricated, of whom five were dead and twenty .seriously injured.—Reuter.
