BOWLS
(By
“No. 3.”)
All bowling interest is centred in Dunedin, where the Dominion Association’s tournament is in full swing. Lhe latest telegrams record the conclusion of section play, and those left m I’.°, ’ section play. Se.ven out of the eight games qualified for the rinks, and those who stood up to the test were as follow:—Davies (West End, Timaru), Gray (Kelburn), McCurdy (St. Kilda), Hariaway (Dunedin, Thomson (Southland), Hutchison (Dunedin), Wright (St. Heliers), Casey (Carlton), 8 wins each, Benefield (St. John’s), Graham (Gore , Gibson (Taieri), Stewart (Dunedin), Malcolm (Balmacewan), Anderson (RosIvu), Pilkington (Hamilton), Fremner ('West End, Auckland), Dee (Maitai), 7 wins each. Of the foregoing rinks, eleven weie from the South Island and six from the North Island, so that there is still a good prospect of a fine mter-islana battle in the concluding games, and much interest will be manifested locally in the post-section draw, as it is . not desirable to draw North Island rinks against one another if it can be avoided, nor should the South Island rinks be eliminated by that exhausting P r °^ es ®’ Of those left in, the Wellington Centie is only represented by one rink, that one skipped by Tom Gray, of the Reburn Club. Gray is more noted for ms dogged persistence and good tactics than by individual bowling brilliance, thoug i he never permits himself to play bad bowls. I can scarcely anticipate ms winning the tournament with any confidence. If the championship conies to the North Island I would favour , the chances of the three Auckland -Casev (Carlton) and Bremner (West End), and the one South Auckland rink, skipped bv that brilliant trundler I tlkington. All three are hard-bitten touinament players, who fight to the last It is somewhat remarkable, and perhaps regrettable, to note that none ot the British rinks were left in post-sec-tion play. Wright, the president of the English Bowling Association, and skipper of the party, is closest to the mark.
