THE CARE OF THE WIRE MATTRESS
Wire mattresses deteriorate very quickly if they are not given regular attention, and the tale of neglect is told ia sagging springs and rusiy wires. The matress is in need of protection, and it should be provided bj means of a cover made of course linen or fine hessian. This should be removed once a week,'•the wires gone over with a small stiff brush, and the wooden framework dusted with a clotn moistened with disinfectant. A secondhand mattress, no matter how good its apparent condition, should always be very thoroughly treated before it is taken into use. It is not a difficult matter to take it apart by loosening the bolts and screws, and then every hole and crack may be gone into with a solution of carbolic and water. After that it should be left out in the air to dry. When quite dry the wire parts maybe given a coat of aluminium paint. This will make it perfectly sanitary, will prevent rust forming, and act as a cure to any that may' already be there.
