VICTIM OF TREACHEROUS
RIVER
Br Telegraph—Ph ess Association Ptikekohe, January 18. A distressing accident occurred in the Waikato River near the Tuakau-Onc-whero bridge yesterday morning; resulting in the’ death by drowning of Hazel Lapwood, aged ]7 years, and Beryl Lapwood, aged 15, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. S. G. Lapwood, Tuak.au. The two girls and a brother, aged 11, and a cousin, aged 15, were paddling on a sand bank, when the girls stepped over a ledge into deep water. Neither was able to swim, and the treacherous current carried them downstream out of sight An alarm was raised by their two companions, a search party was organised, and a launch put out. The bodies were recovered at midday by Mr. Is. 1. Frost.
YOUTH LOSES HIS LIFE. Auckland, January 18. A drowning accident at Pokeno On Saturday, in which Barrett David Muir, 16 years of age, lost his life. He was bathing in a creek with a friend, Frederick Stokes, who could not swim. Mui r tried to “duck” Stokes, and both sank, and Muir did not come to the surface again. Stokes was carried awav by the stream in an exhauster! condition, and was rescued by a neighbouring farmer.
