THE MATATUA LOADING. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Co.’s steamer Malntua arrived at Wellington at 2.30 a.m. yesterday from Opua to continue loading. Sho will leave here on January 31 for Lyttelton and Bluff to HU up I’or London. MIDDLESEX’S MOVEMENTS. The Federal Co.’s steamer Middlesex loft New Plymouth last night for Wanganui Roadstead to continue loading. She will subsequently proceed to Lyttelton, back to Wanganui Roadstead, and thence to Napier, Auckland and Wellington. The vessel is due at Wellington on February 10, aud will leave this port, on February 13 for Boston, New York, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Avonmouth and London.
THE HERTFORD. Tlie Now Zealand Shipping Co. advise that the Hertford arrived at Gisborne at 5 p.m. on Sunday from Wellington for loading. She will-leave Gisborne to-mor-row night for Napier and. Auckland to pick up tho remainder of her cargo.
THE MAIMOA’S MOVEMENTS. The Shaw. Savill and Albion Co. advise that Hie Maimoa will leaves Napier to-day for Timaru, and Wellington to complete loading. The vessel is due heyo on January 27, and will sail finally front this port on January 31 for London via Panama.
THE CAMBRIDGE. The Cambridge, which arrived nt Auckland last week from Liverpool, was formerly a Corman ship named the Voytlantl. She was bnilt in 1916 After the war she was taken oyer by the British Government. Chartered by the Glen Lino she was engaged in the Australian trade and on one occasion took 12,850 tons of wheal: to England. It was the largest cargo of wheat loaded in Australia. With, tlie Norfolk, Hertford, Cumberland and Huntingdon, all . steamers of over 10,000 tons, the Cambridge 10,964 tons, was purchased by the Federal Line. Before loading h<-r present cargo the Cambridge wtis laid up at Falmouth for seven months. During that time tho three compartments in Nos. 2.3, 5 and 11 holds were insulated for tlie carriage of frozen produce and considerable improvements were carried out. in oilier parts of the steamer, including conversion to oil burning. Before being insulated she carried 15,400 tons, but now her carrying capacity Is about 2000 tons less. As a coal-burner sho carried a erew of 97 but as an oil-burner she carries only 59 all told. THE ’FRISCO BOAT. Tho Union Company’s R.M.S. Makurn. which arrived in the ftream at Wellington on Sunday evening from San Francisco, via Papeete anti Rarotonga, was granted pratique yesterday morning, and berthed at No. 1 south (outer tee). Queen's Wharf at 8.35 a.m. The Makura sailed from San Francisco at noon on December 30. and arrived at Papeete at 5.30 a.m. on January 9. The voyage was resinned at 5.30 p.m. on the same date, and the ship arrived at Rarotonga at 7.30 a.m. on January. 11. The vessel nicked up a quantity of fruit, and sailed again at 6 p.m. on that date. Exceptionally fine weather was experienced throughout the .yoyage. The officers reported that the lady passenger from Wellington who lost her passport and recovered it, had no difficulty in landing at San Francisco. While at Rarotonga a native hooked a nine--1 foot shark, and after playing it for half an hour, brought it to the surface, white pusengers endeavoured to photograph it. The line parted; however, and the shark escaped. The Makura brought for discharge ht Wellington 5300 cases of bananas, 150 sacks of coconuts, and 12 cases of other fruits. The -ship’s loading itinerary has not yet been decided., RUAPEHU LOADING. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Ruapehu arrived at Lyttelton on Sunday from Port Chalmers to load for London. The vessel will leave Lyttelton thia evening for Wellington, Tokomaru Bay, Napier, and Auckland, to complete her cargo. The Ruapehu will sail finally from Auckland on February 6 for Southampton and Loudon, via Panama.
THE CANADIAN BRITISHER. . The Canadian Britisher is to leave. Wellington at 4 p.m. to-day for Lyttelton, Timaru, Dunedin, Napier, and then returns to Wellington to load for New York, Boston, and Halifax. . The vessel Is due back at Wellington on February 5, and will proceed from here .to Auckland to complete loading. Tlie Canadian Britisher is to sail finally from Auckland on February 11.
