CRIME IN AMERICA
SERIOUS OUTLOOK LARGE NUMBER OF YOUNG PRISONERS New York, January 15. The New York State Prison Commission, following a survey of the prisons, declares that an alarming . criminal situation exists. “Criminals in America to-day,” it asserts, “are its joutli.” The Commission poiirts out that, whereas the prison population twelve years ago was composed of well-known wrongdoers, older men, the entire population of the Tombs Prison consists of men and boys under thirty, of whom a large number are between the ages of 16 and 20.
The report states that conversations gave the impression that these youths do not possess tough, sordid natures, most of them being of the ordinary type seen about the streets. Very few seemed to realise their desperate plight, the seriousness of the crimes committed, or the outlook for their future lives. The Commission urges the establishment of a foundation for the study of localities and homes from winch these young criminals come, and advocates an organised attempt to improve the surroundings and correct the influences driving them to crime. It also urges building more accommodation in the gaols, thus obviating the herding of young boys with hardened criminals.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
