NUTS’ MANY USES

SOURCE OF MILK, BUTTER, FODDER AND SWEETS.

The United States consumes all its own peanuts, and in addition makes hay of the stems. Aineiica makes candies, sauces, mid milk substitutes from the nuts, but most are eaten as roasted nuts or pea-nut butter. Some eight million bushels aie consumed annually. Natives in various parts of the xyorki make Soups and various other foods of them, India transforms them into sweetmeats, ami vast quantities of oil are extracted- from the nuts in many countries There me also by-products. The residual cake after the extraction of the oil is good feeding-stulf for cattle, and biscuits for human consumption have also been made m Jnuia. Cake unsuitable lor animal-feeding is used extensively for fcitilising. Thev arc also used as litter. The plant of the ground-nut is an annual of diffuse habit.
