France, according to the Bulletin of the Imperial Institute, imports Ji3t , 001 tons ol inoiikev-nuts annually, England 100,000 tons. The United States consumes all its own peanuts, and in addition makes hay of the stems. Aineiica makes candies, sauces, mid milk substitutes from the nuts, but most are eaten as roasted nuts or pea-nut butter. Some eight million bushels aie consumed annually. Natives in various parts of the xyorki make Soups and various other foods of them, India transforms them into sweetmeats, ami vast quantities of oil are extracted- from the nuts in many countries There me also by-products. The residual cake after the extraction of the oil is good feeding-stulf for cattle, and biscuits for human consumption have also been made m Jnuia. Cake unsuitable lor animal-feeding is used extensively for fcitilising. The husks are used as fertiliser, tor making low grade card paper, and alcohol and acetone have been extraitcd bv fermentation. 1 «>c red skins aie used in German;.’ for mixing .with stock-breeding food; they are said to increase the milk production of daily cows. Thev arc also used as litter. The plant of the ground-nut is an annual of diffuse habit. After the Howers wither the voting pods container the seeds arc forced underground ■md the seeds thus become matured at some distance below the surface.
