PLUNKET SHIELD AUCKLAND DEFEATS CANTERBURY Br Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, January 14. Auckland won tho Plunket Shield match by 32 runs, Canterbury failing to add to the overnight score. When play was resumed this morning Anthony bowled the first over to Findlay who blocked the first six balls, and put the seventh into Simpson’s hands at mid-on, a simple catch being dropped. THE NEW ZEALAND TEAM’S TOUR GREAT SUCCESS FROM' VIEWPOINT OF PLAYERS Sydney, January 14. Mr. J. F. Peake, manager of tho New Zealand cricket team, reviewing tho tour, says that the team shows a wonderful improvement as the result of tho experience gained here. He has been complimented by some of the oldest and best-known crickets on the dashing display of his men. Ho paid a tribute to tho hospitality shown to the team at all places visited, and although the tour had not been a success from a financial point of view it had been a great success from the players’ point of view. Oliver heads tho batting averages with 52.7 runs per innings, followed by Dacro, with 50.2. Eight others secured averages over 30. Tho bowling averages have not yet been compiled. Mr. Peake expressed the greatest pleasure at tho conduct of tho team, both on and off the field. • Allcott, Dacro, and Gillespie sail by the Niagara to-day, and the remainder of the team by tho Maunganui to-mor-row. —Press Assn. SOME MORE STATISTICS During the tour recently concluded, ihe New Zealand cricket team scored 4168 runs for the loss of 108 wickets, an average of 38.59 runs per wicket. The Australians compiled 4099 runs for the loss of 127 wickets, making their average 32.27 runs per wicket. The New Zealand howlers are credited with 121 wickets, the remaining six—Brunskill, Longden, Campbell, Alexander, Tweed, dale, and Morrissey—being run out. The New Zealanders received 172 runs as sundries, while the Australians collected 200. This leaves 3996 to bo accounted for by the batsmen for the loss of 108 wickets, and .3899 runs off the bowlers for 121 wickets taken. Tho fieldsmen assisted the bowlers by accounting for 50 of their 121 wickets. Of this number Lowry has the greatest share, having caught 19 and stumped 5. James, who played in only four games, stumped one. Allcott caught 7, Blunt 5, Mcßeath 4, Daere 4. Patrick 3, Oliver ,3, Cunningham 3, Al 100 3, and Crawi ford 2. NO MATCH ON RETURN Christchurch, January 14. There will bo no match in Christchurch between the New Zealand touring team and another eleven, the Cricket Council having found it impossible to assemble a second eleven. It is also stated that Mr. Peake has wired that tho tourers are anxious 'to reach their homes as soon as possible after arrival in New Zealand. “A SECOND TRUMPER” Sydney, January 14. All the newspapers pay a tribute to the South Australian, Alexander, an 18-vear-old University player, as a fine batsman and the best “colt” to come forward for many years.
