One often hears swimming enthusiasts argue incorrectly as to those who were successful in having swam the English Channel. In response to a request for volunteers for a transfusion of blood to a patient in the Hawera Hospital, three men and a woman offered their help (states the Hawera “Star”). After a medical test had been made, one of the men was chosen. Although the operation was quite a success, the patient died the following day, as the aid came too late to save her life.
